- 1 million people per year in the UK have a
work related back injury - It is estimated that four out of every five adults (80%) will experience back pain at some stage in their life.
- The healthcare costs for back pain to a total of £1.6 billion per year.
Prevention is a lot cheaper !
Employers have a legal obligation under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 to make a sufficient and suitable assessment of the risk to employees from the manual handling of loads.
These are:
- Avoid hazardous manual handling operations so far as reasonably practicable;
- Assess any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided; and
- Reduce the risk of injury so far as reasonably practicable.
